It’s been a long but highly enjoyable week
22.11.11 – Tuesday – GET A LOOK IN – I had a call from production designer, Lisa Marie Hall asking me to be a guest speaker at her upcoming ‘Get a Look In’ workshop. I am really honoured! Lisa wants me to speak about my transition from the Film and TV industry to setting up My Special PA and to share my experience and tips about how art department professionals can be more organised and business savvy about their career development. Lots to do before then….
23.11.11 – Wednesday night – NETWORKING AT THE WELLCOME COLLECTION
I attended a really FUN networking event – yep I really said fun and networking in the same sentence. The night was put on by the Urbano Network and was held at The Wellcome Collection in The Medicine Now Gallery – a highly original venue, where networkers were surrounded by exhibits including a 5 ft resin jelly baby, casts of male and female genitals and various interactive videos and models. Far from the norm. Well done Mark Herring – director of Urbano. Good quality wine was drunk, delicious canapes and snacks were guzzled including mushroom risotto balls, black olive popcorn (?) and the most superb tiny duck pancakes.
I met some really interesting contacts on behalf of my key business development client – Design Culture (I attended on their behalf) but I also picked up a few potential warm leads that are interested in working with us at My Special PA. My key connections were: –
- David Richardson – Director of THE REEL
- Gillian MacDonald – Business Developer at LONDON PR
- Richard Corbin – Business Developer IN BAY
- Sasha Qadri – Director at THE RIGHT CUT
- Nick Boland – General Manager THE HOXTON APPRENTICE
Below are some of the pics I took last of night of networkers and the wierd and wonderful Medicine Now Gallery Exhibits
It was a genuinely relaxed, interesting and productive night and I look forward to the next one.
24.11.11 -Thursday – RAJ KAUR at THE OTHER ART FAIR 24-27th NOVEMBER
I have known Raj Kaur since early 2009, we do the same art / life drawing workshops guided by artist Bella Pieroni – ‘LIVELY LIFE’ (that’s a blog post for another day) At the beginning of November, Raj had been invited to take a stand at THE OTHER ART FAIR – London’s newest art fair, marketing itself as ‘an open platform to connect art buyers of all tastes and experience directly with young, emerging artists before they are signed.’
On hearing this news, Raj got straight on the phone to me to book my help. She’s the ideal client for MSPA – ‘just too busy’ Raj has a full time position as a designer at a creative agency but is passionate about honing her own craft as a fine artist. The Art fair was a an ideal opportunity for Raj to showcase her new work but with a full time job she engaged me to get her organised and prepared for the show.
- Selecting artwork for framing and mounting
- Liaising with Art fair personnel, construction assistants, Framers and other suppliers
- Creating task sheets and a budget for the Fair project – all shared on Google docs
- Uploading Raj’s mailing list to MAILCHIMP
- Helping price work, curate the stand and advise on sales tips
Raj sold her first piece ‘SAJAAN’ within minutes of the PV doors opening !
25.11.11 – Friday – Raj is exhausted but very excited and things are continuing to go well. It just goes to show what’s possible when you are really dedicated to your working practice and allow yourself to get the experienced help you need to ensure things go smoothly.
Here are some pics of Raj and her team setting up the show – I was working but I was also taking the pics 😉
